Lesbian and gay bowlers aim for eleventh season
If someone had told you it was going to happen, you'd surely have said "It can't ever," but it did. If someone had told you it was going to continue, you'd surely have said "No way," but it has. If someone had said it was going to happen on Sunday, you'd have surely said "Sure, with our hangovers, never," but it did.
Somewhere back in time, around 1980, 90 guys and gals met at the Chester Twin Lanes to form the first 18 teams (five bowlers per team) of the North Coast Bowling Association's very first season. Yes, it is a mixed league.
Glitter and glitz, sequin-studded bowling shoes and diamond tiaras in the hair, afternoon makeup and proper length eyelashes were all put away to allow for some real butch competition. (All kidding aside, some kept their makeup on).
Fact is, some teams even had real honest bowling shirts, with the sponsor's logo on the back. Real chic ...
The following year, the league had grown so large that it moved to the Ambassador Superior Lanes, 1500 Superior Ave., where they had 36 teams and a full house. The management must have liked them, for the league is still there. Then again, maybe they are locked in-someone should go check.
Two years ago, the league raised its nightly bowler fee from $6.00 to $7.00-that means that they kept the $6.00 fee for eight years.
The last few years the league has held at 28 teams with four division races and playoffs at the end of the season. Last year, the
league captains (in a hotly contested meeting) raised their handicap percentage from 80 to 90. It seems to give the lower-average teams a better chance to win. (Further tests on this are still in process.)
The league has always had teams sponsored by individuals or by businesses that cater to our community. Keys, the Leather Stallion Saloon and Jon Brittain's floral shop are three of the original sponsors still with the league.
The roster of former and continuing sponsors would read like a list of "where's that in Cleveland?": First Class Male, Sonya's Over the Rainbow, Memoirs, Tomahawk, Legends, Black Swan, Attraxions, the very, very old 620, Twiggy's, Water Street Dan's, Adams Street, More Loose Ends and many many more. It is difficult to remember yesterday, let alone ten years ago.
Also last year, to celebrate its tenth anniversary, the league awarded a $1,000 50/50 raffle at its banquet, which was attended by over 220 bowlers, patrons and sponsors.
The officers this year are: Jim G., president; Bill S., vice president; Bill H., secretary; Chuck D., treasurer, and Frank P. of Akron is officer-at-large. Jim G., Chuck D. and Bill H. are all returning for their fourth year in those positions.
If you are bored any Sunday afternoon between September and May, you are more than welcome to visit the Ambassador Lanes, 1500 Superior Ave., to see the league bowl. They start their 11th year Sept. 15. For information, contact Jim at 2528933 or Chuck at 941-6503. ▼

United Way Donors:
Designate Your Pledge to Health Issues Taskforce
Health Issues Taskforce (HIT) is not a member agency of United Way and does not automatically receive United Way funds. However, HIT is part of United Way's Donor Option program, and can receive designated donations. Even though HIT does not appear in the United Way book of agencies you will receive during the campaign, you can write in the Taskforce to receive part or cili of your contribution. In this way, you guarantee that your pledge will help people with AIDS.
How to designate your donation to HIT:
Some companies have special "designated donor" or "donor option" cards. Ask your employer for one. Complete the card, listing the Taskforce as the desig-
nee.
If your company does not have a special donor option card, you can write in Health Issues Taskforce on you pledge card--either along the top of the card or along a line that my be provided.
You can also write a letter, saying you wish your pledge to go to the Taskforce. Attach this letter to your pledge card.
How to list the Taskforce on your pledge card: Write "Health Issues Taskforce" along with the address; Write "H.I.T." along with the address; or
For United Way in Cuyahoga County only, write "Agency #50994"--HIT'S Donor Option number--along with the address. (Some employers may not accept this listing; check first.)
Always include our address in the designation: 2250 Euclid Avenue / Cleveland, OH 44115. This is especially important if you work outside of Cuyahoga County. Last year, the Taskforce received donations from United Way campaigns in counties outside Cuyahoga, such as Ashtabula, Lake, and Summit Counties.
Companies sometimes have their own policies regarding designated donations. Some companies do not accept designated donations; some do not allow designated donations through payroll deductions and require a lump sum payment. Most companies have no restrictions on designated donations. Check with your company about such policies.
Finally, please send us a copy of your pledge card or letter. This will help the Taskforce track donations and catch clerical errors and/or missing donors. If you have any questions, call the Taskforce at (216) 621-0766.
